FUEL UP TO PLAY 60 TACKLES CHILDHOOD OBESITY

Fuel Up to Play 60 is joining the First Lady Michelle Obama’s call to improve the health of our next generation. An in-school nutrition and fitness program launched in partnership by National Dairy Council®, Mid-Atlantic Dairy Association, Pennsylvania Dairy Promotion Program and National Football League, Fuel Up to Play 60 shares the ambitious and attainable goals outlined in the First Lady’s childhood obesity platform.

HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS GROW FRESH PRODUCE AT SCHOOL

Trinity High School Junior, Michelle Delaney, wasn’t always a fan of snap peas. In fact, she didn’t enjoy tomatoes, peppers or onions either. The Goodling Institute for Research in Family Literacy (College of Education, The Pennsylvania State University) provided literacy expertise and the National Institute for Dental and Craniofacial Research (National Institutes for Health) provided oral health expertise.

MANNA’S FOOD RESOURCE SUMMIT 2010

To commemorate National Nutrition Month®, MANNA (Metropolitan Area Neighborhood Nutrition Alliance) hosted a Food Resource Summit with a sampling of other agencies that provide nourishing food, resources, and policy advocacy in the Greater Philadelphia area. MANNA provides free nourishment for people at acute nutritional risk due to life-threatening illnesses, preparing and delivering about 70,000 nourishing meals each month to improve the quality of life of clients.

VITAMIN D—SUPPLEMENTS OR FOODS

This fat-soluble vitamin maintains calcium and phosphorus levels in our blood so we build and maintain strong bones. Natural sources of vitamin D are sunlight and certain foods. If you expose your arms and legs to sunlight for 15-30 minutes in spring, summer and fall, your skin will make all the vitamin D you need for that day. However, sunscreen with a protective factor of 8 or higher will reduce your skin’s ability to make it by 95%.
