NEW ALLEGHENY SITES HELP CHILDREN ACCESS SUMMER FOOD

by Shauna Ponton, Child Nutition Advocate, Just Harvest

This summer, hundreds of children would go hungry if not for the Summer Food
Service Program.

All around the country, anti-hunger advocates are working to find new ways to increase the
number of Summer Food sites and reach more children. Just Harvest, an anti-hunger
organization, located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania has come up with some innovative site development ideas. Just Harvest works to find new sites in underserved areas and to help
boost participation in Allegheny County and the City of Pittsburgh.

Over the past three years, due to the economic downturn, many Summer Food sites did not
open because they did not have funding to hire staff.

DIRECTOR'S CORNER - PA NEN QUARTERLY UPDATE

by Christine E. Mullin, MPH, CPH, RD, Network Director, PA NEN

It has been a busy spring for PA NEN. We accomplished our goal of over 1,000 members in March 2011. Currently, as I write this article, our membership is at 1,050. Hopefully, we will exceed 1200 members by our next conference.

Our Annual Conference is experiencing growing pains. In April, PA NEN experienced its first “sell out” conference with 230 participants and an additional 30 on a waiting list. Our goal next year is to have 250 participants. The PA NEN Conference brought a diversity of nationally known speakers from Ann Cooper, aka “The Renegade Lunch Lady” to Mark Fenton, Public Health, Planning and Transportation Consultant.

LOOKING AHEAD TO PA NEN'S 2012 ANNUAL CONFERENCE

by Rose Pallotta-Cleland, Network Promoter & Event Planner, PA NEN

Save the Date for PA NEN’s 2012 Conference, April 24& 25! PA NEN’s Conference Committee and staff are already at work on the 2012 Conference.

New and Improved for 2012…more sessions. After reviewing the 2011 conference evaluations the committee realized that in order to accommodate thegrowing registration numbers and the diverse backgrounds of conference attendees that we need to add more sessions. There will be three concurrent sessions on the first day of the conference as opposed to two. On the second day there
will be three sets of four concurrent sessions as opposed to three sets of three.

WHAT'S INFLUENCING CHILDREN AND THEIR FOOD CHOICES

by Amanda Frankeny, RD Community Nutritionist, PA NEN

Food marketing does more than wet children’s appetites. Happy meal in hand, Ronald McDonald
cheers, “Put a smile on.” In their car seats, kids glance to soda billboards stretching to the heavens.
Wacky characters on the front of product packages throw themselves into the shopping cart, and
without close supervision, kids enjoy the marketers’ strategies, such as Fred Flintstone on video
games endorsing the sugary cereal, Fruity Pebbles (Look to this site http://www.pebblesplay.com/ for details). With all these advertising venues, tasty treats become the norm as children engage in these medias for an average of six hours a day.

SEEDS FOR LEARNING: GROWING FOOD AND LEADERS

by Tara Anastasi, Program Manager, Seeds for Learning

Seeds for Learning (SFL) is not your traditional nutrition education program nor your typical school garden. Based at Martin Luther King High School in Northwest Philadelphia, SFL is a food justice and entrepreneurship program based in the operations of an urban farm and greenhouse. Collaboration between Foundations, Inc. and local community partners developed the SFL farm to: 1) improve affordable access to high quality, chemical-free, and locally produced food for the community;
2) engage youth in addressing food insecurity; and, 3) provide youth with professional and personal development.

AMERICORPS: YEAR OF NUTRITION EDUCATION AT THE GPCFB

by Douglas Lipari, Nutrition Educator, Serving at the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank

As an AmeriCorps (Pittsburgh Health Corps) member serving at the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank (GPCFB), my role as Nutrition Educator has offered me the amazing opportunity to educate children of the Pittsburgh area on basic nutrition and cooking skills.

The Kids Cook program I manage is a three-part cooking and nutrition course for children ages 5-12. The program focuses on breakfast, lunch and snack. In the breakfast lesson, I teach the children how to safely crack eggs and how to make scrambled eggs. For lunch, they make either tuna or chicken salad while learning how to safely use a can opener. The snack, and most popular lesson, is a healthy fruit smoothie; in this lesson they learn how to operate a blender. We also discuss basic nutrition information such as the importance of eating breakfast, hand washing, and limiting sugary and fatty foods.
